My translation is more than 40 characters? How do I get it to fit?

Why are not all translation fields text boxes that allow unlimited characters?

Background

The left side of the translation page shows the English. The right is the translation. The data entry box on the right side will either be a single field of 40 characters or a text box of unlimited characters. The size is determined at the time of loading. If there already is some text saved in the translation database, it will use that as the count. If not, it will use the number of English letters.

The translation fields are set up so that if the count is 40 characters or less the field should load as a standard 40 character input field. If the count is more than 40 characters, it will come in as a text box.

How to do More than 40 Characters.

If the field loaded as a 40 character input field and you need more than that for a good translation it initially appears that you're stuck. But such is not the case. You first need to save your entry with all 40 characters filled, then reload the page. Since the database now shows 40 characters, it will load as a text box which will allow you unlimited characters.

The Problem

In the event that you try to save with the last character as a space or if you stop an your last letter count is 39 (because you next word would put you over 40), when you save the script thinks you only want 39 characters and it will keep reloading as an input field. So the work around is to simply put some dummy characters at the end (like "Xs"). Just make sure the field is fully filled to 40. Then save and when you reload it will come back as a text box. Then erase your dummy characters and continue with your 40+ character field.
